I am sure we are not unique in using our Nicholson's guide extensively when we cruise. Even on routes I've travelled many times I still have the Nicholsons book out while cruising. today we didn't even get to turn the page on our cruise due in part to the weather and a lock stoppage.
Yesterday afternoon we took advantage of our early arrival and took a walk into Audlem and had a look round. Not something we normally do when cruising but we are trying to be a bit less regimented. We were impressed by the design of the cemetery entrance.
We had a meal in The Lord Combermere, Not bad Sunday roast and the place was relatively quiet, as was the rest of the village. Still nice to explore.
Our mooring last night - the lack of cutting whilst good for nature isn't ideal for hay fever!
We waited out the early morning rain so did not set off until 12.30 and were very surprised as to how quiet the flight was with only one boat coming up and one down all morning. It wasn't until we got to bridge 77 that a boater came up to us and said best stay above the pound they were in as nothing was moving on the flight due to a lock issue at lock 12. So we reversed out of the lock and tied up !
A very quiet flight
We were settling in for the long wait when Phil the boater in the pound below who'd gone to assess the stoppage advised boats were moving ..... so we waited for a the next boat up and then carried on down mooring up before lock 12 for some food.
Of course as soon as we set off the heavens opened and all on the flight got a good dowsing. At times like this I'm happy we have the trad stern allowing me to close the doors and open the umbrella!
We lazed about and then decided to clear the flight and empty the loo so set off again at 4.45pm doing those things then mooring up short of what we set ourselves* on a lovely stretch of armco just past Overwater marina. We are the only boat which is strange based on how nice the mooring is here
*...we are starting to realise that setting destination targets ( when we don't really need to ) is counter productive to our enjoyment. The stop when we want to see something or visit somewhere is starting to become a bit more sensible and therefore attractive. We will see where this approach gets us !!
